A catastrophic aviation disaster struck Ahmedabad today as an Air India flight AI-117 en route from Ahmedabad to London Heathrow crashed shortly after takeoff, slamming into the SV Medical College campus in the city outskirts. Authorities have confirmed 204 bodies recovered, with rescue operations ongoing into the night.

Victims and Rescue Efforts

According to Air India, the flight was carrying 198 passengers and 9 crew members. In addition, 7 students and 3 faculty members at the medical college are believed to be among the victims, raising the death toll.

Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with local police and fire services, are working tirelessly. Over 50 people are critically injured and have been transported to Civil Hospital Ahmedabad.


Possible Cause of Crash

Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames from the engine moments after takeoff. Aviation experts suspect engine malfunction or bird strike as potential causes, though the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched a full investigation.

The black box has been recovered and is being sent for analysis.

India’s Civil Aviation Minister, in a press briefing, called this one of the deadliest crashes in Indian aviation history. An ex gratia compensation of ₹25 lakh for families of deceased passengers has been announced.

The Indian Embassy in London is coordinating with UK authorities for foreign nationals onboard. Heathrow Airport has temporarily suspended incoming flights from India pending clarification.
